Camping Storage Tips & Solutions

Are you an avid camper and need to have more space because you don’t have enough room? Any camping novice knows the importance of storing their camping supplies properly. When storing your tent and other camping items, try out these camping storage tips!

Tent Storage Tips

  1. Break Down the Tent Poles: When breaking apart the tent poles, start in the middle. This will evenly distribute the tension along the poles.
  2. Let Your Tent Sit to Dry: After an extended camping trip, it may be tempting to roll up your tent and store it as soon as you get home. This is not a good idea though, because moisture left on the tent can damage the waterproof coating of the tent. Tents commonly will accumulate condensation under the floor and rainfly. If the weather is nice, place your tent outside to let it dry. If that is not an option for you, use towels to dry off the tent.
  3. Never Store a Dirty Tent: Storing a dirty tent can result in the fabric becoming permanently damaged. Before storing your tent, take the time to shake out any dirt, sticks or rocks that may have gotten stuck inside.
  4. Roll Up the Tent: Do not just shove the tent inside of the tent storage bag. This can damage the tent fabric and coating. Instead, roll it up and place it inside of a loose mesh bag or pillow case. Storing your tent inside of the bag the tent came in can actually damage the tent. This bag is very constricting and does not allow the fabric of the tent to breath.
  5. Avoid Storing Camping Supplies in Your Trunk or Garage: Avid campers will often store their camping supplies in their trunk or garage, so their items are close between camping trips. This is not a good camping storage solution, as these locations are prone to extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Instead, consider storing your camping items in a climate controlled storage unit. A climate controlled storage unit will maintain a steady temperature ideal for the storage of sensitive items.

Sleeping Bag Storage Tips

Surprisingly enough, the same rules for storing a tent goes along with storing a sleeping bag. Find tips for storing your sleeping bag below.

  1. Clean Out Sleeping Bag: Before storing your sleeping bag, be sure to clean it out. Hold the sleeping bag upside down and shake out any dirt, stick, rocks or other debris that may be stuck inside.
  2. Use a Loose Bag: Just like when storing a tent, it is important to never jam your sleeping bag back inside of its storage bag. Instead, roll it up and place it inside of a loose mesh bag or pillow case.
