If you’re making the move to Dallas, you are probably counting down the days until you can pack everything up and finally call this city home. Since Dallas is the third most populated city in all of Texas, a move to this bustling city requires some planning. Luckily for you, we’ve lined up the top five tips you’ll need to know before moving to Dallas.

Since downtown Dallas is so densely populated, you tend to find people moving into smaller ranch-style homes, townhouses, or loft apartments. Downsizing from a larger place typically means you’ll need to do a little extra work before you make the move. Use these tips to help you plan your move to Dallas and start this new journey off on the right foot.

  1. Storage Units in Dallas
If you are downsizing from a larger space to a smaller one, organization is key. Most ranch-style homes or condos don’t have the same space a traditional two-level home has. So, that means some of your items will need to either be thrown away, sold, or placed into temporary storage. Create piles of items you’ll move with you, items you’ll sell or giveaway, and items you’ll need to store. In Dallas, investing in a storage unit is a smart choice because everything you need is easily accessible, but not taking up space in your new home.Since Dallas is much warmer than many other states in the US, you can probably go ahead and pack up your winter boots, your snowblower, and your shovel. But, be sure to find a climate-controlled storage unit that is protected from the elements, because even though it doesn’t snow, Dallas can fall victim to some severe tropical storms.
  2. Invest in Alternate Transportation
One of the best ways to get around the Dallas area, especially downtown and midtown, is by bike. If you don’t currently have a bicycle, you might want to consider investing in one before you make your big move to Dallas. Having a car is always useful, but you might enjoy walking or biking more in the warmer months. Bicyclists are very common in and around the Dallas area, on both main roadways and designated bike paths. When you are looking for storage units in Dallas, consider one that has storage for your car as well. If you don’t plan to use a car as often, it’s best to keep it safe and protected from Mother Nature.
  3. Visit Before You Move
Even if you’ve been to Dallas many times, try to plan another visit before making your final move. Visiting the city and experiencing it as a local will help you get a better feel for the types of things you’ll need when you move there permanently. Talk to some locals and get their opinions on the neighborhoods in your desired area. Not only will it give you peace of mind, but it can also help you learn a little more about what life will be like on a daily basis.
  4. Plan Your Move Strategically
If you can help it, plan to avoid moving during the wet season. Severe thunderstorms and tropical storms are plentiful from May to October and can make moving a little more frustrating. Since winters are so mild, fall and spring are really enjoyable times to move to the big city and aren’t quite as hot.
  5. Start Planning Your Excursions
It’s easy to get caught up in the logistics of moving and forget to think about all the exciting things you can do once you live in Dallas. Dallas is home to the Cowboys and if you get the chance to you have to see a game. And of course, you can’t move to Dallas without having a planned trip to Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza that commemorates John F. Kennedy.

Whether you are moving to Coppel, University Park, Plano, or the downtown area, Dallas has so much to offer. Make sure you plan your move in advance, take advantage of storage units in the Dallas area and declutter your life so you can start fresh in this exciting new city.
