Moving Into Your First Apartment Checklist

Moving out of your parents’ house and into your first apartment is a very exciting time. As with any big decision, moving into your own apartment can be very overwhelming. Fortunately, when you follow a few quick tips, moving into your first apartment will be a breeze. Try out these tips below.

Your First Apartment Checklist: 5 Tips for a Smooth Move

1. Stick to Your Budget

Budgeting for your first apartment can be a challenge. In order to make the move a successful one, the first step is to create an accurate budget and stick to it. To determine if you can afford your first apartment, take some time to write down all of your monthly expenses, including:

  • Rent – what you’d feel comfortable paying each month based on your income
  • Utilities
  • Rental insurance
  • Food
  • Gas

If your expenses aren’t set in stone every month, like for food and gas for example, estimate how much you’d ideally like to spend. Once you’ve added up all of your monthly expenses, subtract the total from your net monthly income. This will tell you how much money you have left over once all of your expenses have been accounted for.

2. Ask Yourself: What Amenities Do I Want?

Next, make a list of the amenities and features you want to be included with your apartment. Are you looking for a fitness center? Is an outdoor pool a must-have? How about a washer and dryer in unit? When searching for an apartment, filter by the features that are most important to you.

3. Tour Apartments That Have What You’re Looking For

Once you’ve determined your budget and have thought about the features and amenities you need, it’s time to take a look at apartments in person. Make a list of the buildings you’d like to see. Once you have narrowed down the apartments you’re considering, schedule tours with the rental managers.

4. Read and Understand the Lease

Before you sign the lease, make sure you fully understand it. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Keep an eye out for the important sections that could be relevant to you, such as any late fees, visitor policies, or pet restrictions.

5. Decide What to Keep, Throw Away or Donate

You probably won’t need to take everything from the home where you grew up. As you pack, keep an eye out for items you no longer need or want to bring to your first apartment. Ask your parents if you can leave some of the more sentimental items. Consider donating anything that is still in good shape and useful so that others can enjoy it.

Not Enough Storage Space? Consider a Storage Unit Rental!

As you move into your first apartment, you’ll find that storage space is limited. If you discover you need more space for your belongings after you move, consider renting a storage unit before the big day!
