How to Teach Kids about Hygiene

There’s no better time than now to teach your children about good hygiene habits. Teaching personal hygiene for kids may seem like a daunting task, especially if you have young children. But with a little bit of effort, they can find learning fun, and the task will be much more enjoyable. Below are three good hygiene practices for kids and tips on how to make them exciting.

3 Good Hygiene Practices for Kids

  1. Hand hygiene.

One of the easiest ways to stop the spread of germs is to wash your hands. It’s essential to show your kids how to wash their hands after activities such as playing outside, playing with animals, visiting someone who’s sick and using the bathroom.

Trimming your nails is also a critical part of hand hygiene. Germs and bacteria can find themselves a home under nails, especially if your child loves to spend time outside. It’s important to show them how to thoroughly clean under their nails as part of their nightly bath time ritual.

To make it fun, have them pick a song to wash their hands to and pick out their own nail brush. If there’s a fun aspect to hygiene, children will be more likely keep up the habit.

  1. Skin hygiene.

Until they get a little older, your young children will still need you to help them with bath time and checking for blemishes. But, you can use this time to show them proper bathing techniques and skin care.

Using fun toys like goggles and visors during bathing can help kids take the first step towards wanting to bathe. You can even try using craft time to have the kids decorate their own visors with puffy paint and waterproof markers.

  1. Coughing and sneezing habits.

No matter how hard we try to prevent it, our children are going to get sick. Even if the cough or sneeze is from allergies, you can use this opportunity to teach them how to cut down on the spread of illnesses. Show them how to cough or sneeze into their elbow, a tissue or a handkerchief, and choose a fun code word to use as a reminder when they forget.
